5 Basics Tips for Supplying Print Ready Artwork

If you are supplying your own artwork then these are the 5 tips to follow to ensure it's print ready

1. Bleed

We ask that you supply your artwork with 3mm bleed on each edge. This is an area that extends 3mm beyond the trim area where your images and background colours continue through. This ensures that when trimmed there is never a white edge.

2. CMYK

Ensure your file is set up as CMYK rather than RGB. Printers create the colours using CMYK inks (and spot colours if required) so having your file as CMYK ensures that you aren't using colours that are outside its spectrum. As RGB is created with light you could possibly have very vivid colours that just aren't possible with the CMYK process and you'd be disappointed with the result. Before we send you a proof we check for RGB and we will convert these to CMYK so you will see at proof stage any changes in colour.

3. High resolution between 150 and 300 dpi

As a designer when I create my artwork I always have my files set as 300dpi as a standard. This is the best resolution that I would recommend to work with. Of course with some images this isn't always possible therefore I would say that 150dpi is the minimum recommendation for general print work (such as business cards, leaflets, brochures, posters etc). Anything less will look poor quality and pixelated.

For larger jobs, such as banners and exhibitions, you can get away with poorer quality images as with these jobs you don't inspect them at close range, but would be stood at a reasonable distance away. Therefore with these I would recommend a minimum of 75 dpi.

4. Safe Margin

A safe margin is the area within the trim edges where you want to keep clear from text or logos. We recommend a minimum 5mm safe margin in general to ensure that nothing of importance is trimmed too close to the edge. In programs such as indesign you can set up a margin in your document settings to make it easier to see.

5. PDF file

We ask that you save/export your files as high res PDF files, not forgetting to add your bleed in the export settings.

All the above elements will be checked before we send you a proof and we will let you know if we see any problems. But ensuring all the above pointers are followed first time round means that the process will be faster and more efficient.

What is bleed in printing?

What is bleed in printing? If you are supplying your own artwork then one of the artwork requirements we ask for is 3mm bleed.... But what is bleed in printing?

So how does a bleed area help?

Printers bleed is a 3mm extra area outside of all 4 trim edges where the images and background colours continues across.
So if there is a slight movement you won't see a white edge but instead your image will continue as though the movement was never there.

But 3mm sounds like a lot of movement

Your printed jobs aren't likely to be 3mm off centre but we ask for 3mm so we are better safe than sorry.

How do I set up a bleed area?

In a program such as Indesign and Illustrator you can set the bleed area in your document settings. Then when you export to PDF ensure you have set 3mm as the bleed in the export settings.

In a program such as photoshop it doesn't have bleed settings so you will have to create your file as the size including bleed. So for an A4 (210 x297mm) you will need to create a file that is 216 x303 mm ( A4 size plus 3mm extra at every edge). Then you could add on some margins to be sure you don't mistakingly put any logos or text too close to that edge.

For setting up in photoshop here are some common print sizes with the bleed included to help you out:

In a program such as Canva it won't display your bleed area but just be mindful that you are positioning images past the trim edge. Then export as a "print pdf", check the box for "tick marks and bleed". Then you can check your PDF to see if you have everything bleeding over that needs to be.

Be aware in Canva that some sizes, such as business card, actually aren't the correct sizes for the UK.

So what is bleed in printing? Basically bleed is just the images and background colours "bleeding" over an extra 3mm from the trim edges. Not as scary as it sounds, but an important part of supplying artwork.

What is Wiro Binding? Wiro binding sometimes called Wire-o or spiral binding is a binding method which uses a continuous spiral wire that coils through holes down one edge of the booklet.

What are wiro binding benefits?

wiro bound booklets can lay flat when opened up without damaging the spine.
wiro bound books can be folded back on themselves.
work well as either double sided or single sided printed pages.
don't have to worry as much about the total page count unlike saddle stitching and perfect binding (which have to be in multiples of four).

What is perfect binding? Is it suitable for my printed brochures?

What binding method will be suitable for your next print job? Could it be a perfect bound job? Not sure what it entails? Well read on to find out more...

What is Perfect binding - Perfect binding is a binding method for soft cover books. It can be used on books with 40 pages upwards.

So, what is perfect binding - The pages are stacked together, the binding edge is then roughed up to give a better surface for glue to adhere to, then the pages are glued to the spine of the cover with a strong flexible thermal glue. Once dry the 3 remaining edges are trimmed to achieve "perfect" straight edges.

The benefits of perfect binding

The end result is a neat and tidy book with perfect square edges
Perfect binding creates a spine area that can be used for printing on a title.
They stack well.
Perfect binding is an affordable way to produce a professional looking brochure/book etc.

Which printed products will suit perfect binding?

Ideal for books, catalogues, brochures etc.

You will see a lot of soft cover books are bound in this way. They look very professional and will impress your customers and clients.

Other Binding Methods Available

Saddle Stitching

If your job is less than 40 pages then you would be best considering saddle stitching for your binding instead as the spine would be too narrow for glueing. See my blog here to read more about saddle stitching.

Similar to perfect binding but with a hard back cover. Watch this space for an article coming soon!

How should I set up my artwork for perfect binding?

7mm safe area around the edges. Keep text and important imagery such as logos away from this area to avoid them being trimmed too close to the edge or hidden within the spine area.
have a minimum of 40 pages (including cover) and make sure you have an even number to avoid having a blank page.
colour set up as CMYK
minimum 150dpi on images
saved as a high res PDF, single file with multiple single pages.

So to summarise perfect bounds books are neat square books that have a square spine and stack well. A professional result!

So, what is saddle stitching for brochures? Is it right for me?

You may have heard us mention saddle stitching as a binding method but what is saddle stitching and when should you use it?

What is Saddle stitching - well it is a way of binding together your brochures that are 8 pages or more.

They consist of many pieces of paper folded in half (to create 4 pages at a time), then they are nested inside each other and long wire staples are threaded/stitched along the fold to secure them together. Due to the nature of this binding your final page count will always need to be in multiples of 4. So for example, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 pages etc are all acceptable page counts for a saddle stitched booklet.

So why is it called "saddle stitched" and not just stapled?

The long wire staples are "stitched" through the paper and the pieces of paper are sat on a saddle like piece of apparatus whilst they are collated and stitched. Peculiar name, but makes sense now you know!

How many pages does saddle stitching suit?

Saddle stitching is the preferred method for binding when you have a relatively low page count in your printed brochure from as low as 8 pages.

Once you go over 56 pages you will need to consider a different binding method called perfect bound or possibly wiro bound. You may also want to consider perfect binding from 40 printed pages, although saddle stitching is still an option at this amount.

The reason why you don't want too many pages in a saddle stitched brochure is because they become thicker, bulkier and won't lay flat.

What sort of jobs would suit saddle stitching?

There are many types of printed jobs that would suit saddle stitching such as company brochures, product guides, instruction manuals, catalogues, story books, travel guides, price guides, information booklets and so much more.

Saddle stitched brochures are an economical binding method and are relatively strong and reliable. This is why you will see saddle stitching used so much around you in your everyday life.

What should you consider when creating artwork?

page count must be in multiples of 4 to avoid any blank pages
allow plenty of safe area/margins at the edges (area where there's no text or important imagery such as logos). At least 5mm is always a good guideline to follow. This is important at the binding edge so you don't loose sight of anything within the fold. On the outer edge you need the safe area to be sure nothing of importance gets trimmed off (as the thicker the brochure gets, the more will get trimmed off the middle pages, due to them getting pushed out by the collation). You can always check with us what we recommend specifically for your printed brochure.
as with any print job, resolutions with a minimum of 150dpi are recommended.

provided as a multiple page pdf as single pages (not spreads) .

Sticker Printing - New Machine , New Print Possibilities ..... White is the new black!

Just before Christmas we were lucky enough to get accepted for a grant supported by SME Restart & Recovery and Kickstarting Tourism Package which is fully funded by the England European Regional Development Fund Operational Programme 2014-20. Our offer was approved to purchase a Roland BN20 to expand our printing company in Sheffield. This new printing machine broadens our sticker printing capabilities and product range to help us to expand during the covid-19 situation that has had an effect on such a lot of businesses.

So why are we so excited about this new printer?

It's similar to a printing machine we already have but this one can print with full colour AND white ink.

So now we can print onto clear sticker material and underpin the full colour with white ink so the printed area is opaque and you can see the image regardless of what's at the other side. Think office/shop window stickers, drinks bottle labels, car window stickers, etc

Not forgetting that this also has a plotter cutter that can cut out printed bespoke labels to any shape or size that you'd like. So you can cut out individual letters or to the shape of your logo, even cut out to the shape of a person.... there are few limitations.

So which new products can we print?

Printed drinks bottle labels. The colour of the drink inside won't affect the colour on your label. So if the liquid is dark you can still see the lighter colours on your label.

Bespoke car window stickers. You can see the printed graphic clearly without showing through the inside of the car.

Printed Window Stickers for shops or offices. You can still see your window graphics despite what's on the inside.
Also if you want the window sticker on the inside of the window then you have to print onto clear adhesive material and use white ink to back it up.

Food packaging labels for jars, bottles etc.

Box labels. Maybe you want to still see the colour of the board underneath some small writing and graphics.... Now you can.

6 Tips to Make Your Printed Business Cards Interesting

Let's talk business cards! Every business has them printed. Here are 6 ways to make them a bit different and stand out amongst your competitors.

1. Design - this is the most important part of the printed business card. You need a good design. It doesn't need to be over fussy. It needs your logo and to follow your brand identity and corporate colours (see my blog on logo design). It must show all your relevant contact details clearly as this is THE number one priority of your printed business card.

2. Orientation - most cards are landscape but some go for portrait which can make it that little bit more interesting. Can depend on how your logo lends itself to the layout design.

You could even have a square business card. You don't see many of those around, although remember they will be smaller at 55 x 55 mm (the standard printed business card size is 85 x 55mm).

3 . Single or double sided printed business card - why not have something printed on the reverse. It doesn't cost much more. Even simply filled with a solid colour can look good. Or you could use the space to add products/services that your business supplies. Maybe even a good photo of the products you do or an interior you've designed etc.... Could be a good place to showcase what you do.

4. Folded business cards - maybe you have a lot of information you want to give out on your business card then a folded business card will give you twice as much printing space.

5. The material - we always recommend business cards are 450gsm silk as standard. This is a good, sturdy, thickness that gives a feeling of quality. Anything thinner could start to feel cheap.

6. The extra finishing touches... matt and gloss lamination, spot UV varnish and foils - these can really add to the business card and make them stand out. Let's break these options down:

Lamination - this is a film added to the surface of the printed business card with either a gloss, matt or soft touch finish. You'd be surprised that this doesn't cost much extra either.

Spot UV Varnish - I personally love this one. The printed business card needs to be matt laminated first so you get a striking contrast. Then a gloss varnish is applied but you can choose exactly where to have it. So you could choose to highlight a part, or all of your logo. Or something which I've done to our own cards is to have a plain solid black reverse (can be any colour) then I've put the icon part of our logo as a Spot UV varnish on top so it's quite subtle and as you've move it in the light it pings out at you. It's a nice touch and some of our customers have asked for the same effect.

Metallic Foils - Another nice extra finish, would look exceptionally good on a dark printed background. These can be to any shape you'd like, so could be used on part of your logo or even some text (but not too small). Foiling is the most expensive extra but depending on your business it can be worth it.

The battle of RGB vs CMYK - which should you pick and why

So you sent your printing company (hopefully us) an amazing bright vivid piece of artwork and it's come back printed duller.... What happen ed?

Someone turned the lights out!

Really! .... You had it set up in RGB (for lights) but its been converted to CMYK, so it can be printed.

RGB What?

RGB is made up of light - red , green and blue lights! This is how a computer screen makes colour. Turn off the lights and you get black. Put all three colours on and you get white.

CMYK is used in print. Cyan , magenta , yellow and key (black) inks. They are the primary colours of the print world. Mixed in various ways and you can make just about all the colours you need. Did you know 100% magenta mixed with 100% yellow makes a pure bright red, so forget what you learned at primary school!

RGB colours can create very bright and vivid colours which you simply can't replicate with CMYK . The main reason is light. RGB uses it but the ink simply doesn't. Brilliant for your website, not so good for your print.

"Hold on, I've seen flyers come through my letterbox with illuminous printed colours"

Well this is because they've printed them using CMYK plus a spot colour.

Woah! What's a spot colour?

A spot colour is a ready mixed ink commonly named Pantone colours. PANTONE colours are a huge colour library of pre mixed inks - and yes, you can then have vivid, illuminous or even metallic colours. But these then come at an extra cost and are only cost effective if you are having large print runs. They do have fantastic finished print results though, so get in touch if you'd like to discuss these further.

What happens if I forget and send my artwork in RGB?

We always check the artwork when we start preparing it for print and if there's RGB then we will convert it to CMYK for you. This is all done before we send your proof.... So if your proof arrives in your mailbox and you think it looks duller than what you sent, that'll be why.

Although, bear in mind, an electronic PDF proof viewed on your screen still isn't colour accurate to how it will print (due to the light of the screen again). Although once we've converted any RGB to CMYK it will be a closer representation.

So always create your print artwork set up in CMYK colour mode. This way you won't be disappointed and will be seeing more realistic colour results to what you'll get with your printed leaflets, posters or roller banners etc.

How we created a Print and Design company when times went bad

My phone rings.... "Hello"
"Laura, the printers has gone into administration. We've both lost our jobs"

Not the phone call I wanted when at home on maternity leave and we both work at the same company!

Such a sense of dread. Both out of work with a family to look after. Nightmare.

Look at the positives - at least with me on maternity leave we can focus on Rich getting a job first.

Rich was the Reprographics Supervisor. He had a job of many roles - running the digital and large format printing presses, planning his work load, putting together banners, exhibitions, signs, stickers and creating the plates for the litho guys. He enjoyed how varied it was. Problem now is no other job covers ALL those areas and they are shift work.

Trying to remain positive but I can see how unhappy the prospect of these unsuitable jobs are making Rich feel.

So he come up with an idea...... Lets do it ourselves. Let's start our own print and design company.

Got to admit I was very hesitant at first. What if it doesn't work out.... We'd loose a lot of money.

WE CAN DO THIS

But looking into it further I agree with him... Yeah we can do this.

Worst case scenario - we loose the redundancy money.... Money that we didn't have before.

THE PERFECT TEAM

We are lucky that together we have the skills for this. Rich has all the "know how" and skills on printing with various means..... And I can do the graphic design.

We both get a few extra hats to try on.... Rich doing the quotes and me doing the accounts - inputting invoices and receipts and keeping track on payments.
